[advancemame-users] AdvanceCD Does Not Boot

For what it's worth, the AdvanceCD ISO does not actually work. It is
supposed to be bootable, but it does not boot.

I created other bootable CDs for Linux and MS-DOS, and those work fine
on my game PC, but the AdvanceCD does not.

Sigh.

It does boot for me. But the kernel is rather old, so many new graphic
cards isn't supported.

Mine is an ATI Radeon 7500, which is on the list of supported cards for AdvanceCD.

I'm going through the same steps with all other ISOs. The only CD that does not boot is AdvanceCD. I'm not looking for a fight, just some suggestions.

Why this long and stupid disclaimer ?
It's appended by the corporate e-mail server. Not much I can do about it.

The disclaimer is just there. Don't worry about it. Yeah, your card is
supported - but that doesn't mean it works. I have two ATI X800s that are
supported, but don't work with the adv drivers for who knows why. They're
about at the end of the line for supported ATI cards, though. Your card
should work. I had 7000 that worked just fine. I think it's something else
related to system compatibility.

OK. Then please explain how far in the booting process you get.

There's not much to say. The PC does not see the CDROM as bootable, so I never get the message that says, "Press a key to boot from CD." It just goes right past the POST and boots from drive C. Other bootable CD-ROMS boot fine.

Normally I would agree with you that I must be doing something wrong, but I am following the exact same procedure for all ISOs.

If you want to check me out on this, you can watch the following screen capture of me actually creating the bootable CD.

I have seen this with other projects. Check a couple of things...make sure
you burnt to a CD, not a DVD.

Also, download the newest ISOLinux from here:
http://syslinux.zytor.com/wiki/index.php/ISOLINUX
Old versions of ISO linux were...uh...old and didn't work on DVD's...it also
didn't work well on some CD's. Replace the relevant updated ISOLinux bits
in the AdvanceCD unzip and everything will probably work...even on a DVD.
This has worked great on other projects even when the project was only
designed for CD. I haven't tried it on AdvanceCD...but I bet everything
will "just work".

I assume you can boot other CD's from this machine, so it is not a BIOS
limitation, correct. for me.

Todd

I still think you are doing something wrong because advancecd boots
for anyone else.

You don't add files when you're burning an ISO like you do when you're
burning a standard data CD. You just select the ISO and click "Burn,"
which is what I did in the video. No matter, it had something to do with
the computer. I tried the same CDROM on another computer and it booted
into AdvanceCD just fine.

Yes I know of course. You need to add some mame roms etc. _before_ you
run the makecd.bat which create the iso-file.

Oh, right. Thanks. But the problem was that it wasn't booting at all. I
guess there was some issue with the PC. The new PC boots it OK.

Having said that, the new computer runs the AdvanceCD "demos" just fine,
but when I actually select a game to play, it says "Loading..." and
then freezes the PC hard. The CAPS LOCK key does not even light. :-(
